Elon Musk becomes the world’s richest person again after falling behind Jeff Bezos.
Elon Musk’s net worth is $183.8 billion (£134.4 billion) as of Tuesday according to Forbes. But the Democratic House Representative Bernie Sanders blasted the billionaire by comparing his wealth to the American minimum wage.
Mr Sanders said: “Wealth of Elon Musk on March 18, 2020: $24.5 billion.
“Wealth of Elon Musk on January 9, 2021: $209 billion,” the Senator wrote.
“US minimum wage in 2009: $7.25 an hour. US minimum wage in 2021: $7.25 an hour.
“Our job: Raise the minimum wage to at least $15, tax the rich & create an economy for all.”
But he has returned to the top spot after Tesla shares rebounded on Tuesday. Since March 2020, his shares have risen by around $160 billion – from $24.6 billion.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos had held the top spot on the Forbes rich list since 2017.
Musk responded to news that he had topped the rich list in trademark style, writing “How strange”.
The SpaceX and Tesla entrepreneur, who is known for working up to 17 hours a day, added: “Well, back to work…”
Musk, who served as an inspiration for Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man, is also the founder of The Boring Company, and cofounder of OpenAI and Neuralink.
The South African launched the SpaceX Mars program to facilitate the eventual colonization of Mars.
In 2018, he told followers on Twitter of how intends to use his wealth.
Mr. Musk wrote: “You should ask why I would want money“.
